junior ranger

Our Junior Ranger program partners with local naturalists to share the wonders of the wilderness with The Ranch at Laguna Beach kids. Junior Ranger activities give our youngest guests the chance to enjoy nature while making new friends and learning about the land.

Wednesdays: Bees and Bugs

Learn: Junior Rangers will explore the insect kingdom, learning all about local insects and the importance of bees in our ecosystem.

Create: Local artists will join us to develop nature journals as we sketch and take an animation class.

Explore: With help from our nature journals, we’ll seek to identify insects in their natural habitat!

Thursdays: Garden Party

Learn: Harvest Garden is the perfect spot for Junior Rangers to learn how to grow and harvest with The Ecology Center.

Create: Campers will decorate their own planting tins and then plant seed-bearing lollipops in them.

Explore: While searching our organic garden to find the perfect ingredients for making salsa, Junior Rangers will discover when tomatoes are ripe, how to pick cilantro and other garden tips. After we finish, we’ll head back to Ranger Station and enjoy the harvest as a group.

Fridays: Creature, Plants and People of the Canyon

Led by local Laguna Canyon Foundation naturalists

Learn: Junior Rangers will walk through The Ranch LB’s camp, imagining that they just landed here and had to survive. What resources are available for shelter and food? What animal instincts do we, as humans, have to protect ourselves? What creatures do we share this canyon with and how do we all survive?

Create: Junior Rangers will observe animal pelts and skulls, make animal tracks and discover how local animals adapt to this environment.

Explore: Junior Rangers will learn about hunting and gathering vs. farming; predators, prey and camouflage; and  finding and building shelter in the canyon.

Saturdays: Birds of Prey

Learn: Junior Rangers will learn about raptors through an interactive experience presented by the Orange County Bird of Prey Center.

Create: Using a pinecone and other indigenous elements, little ranchers will design and create their own owls to take home.

Explore: We’ll head out on a nature hike to search for birds. We’ll even bring along our Audubon expert to point out various species.
