Great California Breweries To Try at The Ranch at Laguna Beach

September 22, 2017

With more than 850 craft breweries operating in California, according to the California Craft Brewers Association, it’s never been easier to find a great beer around here. Whether you prefer a hoppy IPA, a crisp pilsner, a roasty porter or one of the countless other styles, our state has you covered with world-class options.

Here are four of our favorite California breweries — at any given time, you’ll most likely find offerings from one or more of them on the menu at The Ranch LB.

Ballast Point, San Diego
Founded in 1996 by college roommates, Ballast Point has grown into one of the biggest breweries in California. Its beers — including the famous Sculpin IPA — have won numerous awards, including several gold medals at the World Beer Cup. Many of the brewery’s offerings are named after fish or fishing terms, such as Manta Ray double IPA, Longfin lager and more. Ballast Point also operates Home Brew Mart, which actually predates the brewery and has inspired many a brewmaster since its opening in 1992.

Firestone Walker, Paso Robles
Firestone Walker’s logo is comprised of a battling bear and lion — representing the brothers-in-law who founded the brewery together in 1996. Their award-winning beers take on the same intensity, with styles ranging from the hop-fueled Union Jack IPA to Parabola, the brewery’s barrel-aged imperial stout. Firestone Walker also has a program producing “wild” ales, which can be sour, funky and unlike any beer you’ve ever tasted before.

The Lost Abbey, San Marcos
The Lost Abbey found success soon after its launch in 2006, winning the Small Brewery of the Year honor with its sister brewery, Port Brewing, at the 2007 Great American Beer Festival. True to its name, the brewery focuses on Belgian-inspired beers, including medal-winning barrel-aged and sour offerings. With a “library” of more than 1,000 bourbon, brandy, sherry and wine barrels available to age beers, The Lost Abbey is sure to continue brewing up innovative and inspiring creations for years to come.

Stone, Escondido
Another of the craft-brewing scene’s forefathers, Stone has become one of the largest breweries in the country since opening its doors in 1996. Famous for its Arrogant Bastard Ale — which carries a tagline of “You’re not worthy” — Stone is all about the love of the hop, with beers that are potent and often pack a beautifully bitter punch. Stone was voted as the “All-Time Top Brewery on Planet Earth” by readers of BeerAdvocate. Accordingly, the brewery’s reach is now global; Stone recently opened a new facility in Berlin, Germany.
